What is ABC Cable?

ABC stands for Aerial Bundled Cable. It is a system of multiple insulated conductors arranged and protected under a single outer jacket, typically deployed for urban overhead distribution. It offers safer, neater installations, reduced corona losses at lower voltages, and easier maintenance compared with traditional bare conductors.

In urban and suburban networks, ABC simplifies routing and minimizes street clutter while maintaining reliable power delivery. The bundled conductors are usually insulated with XLPE or similar materials and may include spacers or ball spacers to keep the cores in proper alignment. The outer jacket provides weather resistance and protection against moisture, UV exposure, and mechanical wear. While ABC is well-suited for lower to medium voltage distribution, design details such as the bundle size, insulation type, and shield or jacket specifications are chosen to meet local codes, voltage levels, and environmental conditions.

Key Features and Typical Applications:

  • Bundle configuration: tri- or quad-core conductors within one jacket for compact urban networks
  • Insulation and jacket: XLPE or similar materials with weather-resistant, UV-stable jackets
  • Environmental resilience: moisture barriers, UV resistance, and abrasion protection
  • Mechanical design: spacers, clamps, and hardware tailored for aerial routes
  • Applications: urban distribution, street lighting, campus networks, and short to medium-span overhead feeders

Installation and Maintenance Considerations:

  • Sag and spacing: ensure proper clearances and tension for temperature variations
  • Termination and accessories: compatible connectors, glands, and splices designed for ABC
  • Fault localization: easier fault tracing due to organized, shielded bundles
  • Weather and environment: consider moisture ingress, pollution, and UV exposure in jacket choice
  • Standards and documentation: third-party tests, certifications, and batch traceability
