Is NA2XY Aluminium XLPE Cable Suitable for Direct Burial Outdoor Installation?

NA2XY cable is suitable for direct burial outdoor installation provided it is placed within protective conduits, ducts, or concrete trenches with a continuous layer of washed sand bedding. As an unarmored aluminum power cable featuring a Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE) insulation and a Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) outer sheath rated for 0.6/1 kV, NA2XY offers high thermal tolerance (90°C continuous operating temperature) and excellent moisture resistance. However, because it lacks metal wire or steel tape armoring, direct uncontained ground burial exposes the PVC outer jacket to mechanical stress, point-load crushing from sharp rocks, and accidental impact from excavation equipment.

Mechanical Protection Requirements for Outdoor Ground Burial

Unarmored power cables like NA2XY require structural precautions during outdoor subterranean installation to prevent insulation sheath degradation and conductor failure:

  • Sand Bedding Layer: The cable trench must be lined with a minimum 100 mm layer of settled, well-compacted, fine washed sand underneath and surrounding the cable to prevent sharp soil aggregates from piercing the PVC outer sheath under ground settlement pressure.
  • Rigid Conduit or Ducting: Under heavy vehicular load zones, road crossings, or dense soil entry points, NA2XY must be routed through high-density polyethylene (HDPE) [4] or rigid PVC conduits to absorb external static and dynamic physical forces.
  • Warning Tapes & Cable Covers: Polymeric warning markers or concrete protective cover tiles must be laid 200 mm to 300 mm above the cable path to provide visual and physical warning against future trench excavation damage.

CJDL CABLE Engineering Insight

NA2XY aluminum offers a cost-effective choice for long-distance outdoor feeders when the unarmored PVC sheath is protected per the sand-bedded trench and conduit practice above. CJDL CABLE manufactures NA2XY to IEC 60502-1, with 0.6/1 kV rating and 90°C continuous conductor temperature. For direct burial, our engineering team recommends HD 603 S1 / VDE 0276-603 installation with sand bedding and warning covers.
